| Indian Trucker Strike ContinuesFri, 09 Jan 2009 13:31:55 -0800 by NTDTVCHAN:Vegetable prices have almost doubled in the Indian capital of New Delhi. That's because a trucker's strike is now in it's fourth day… leading to a major shortage of vegetables to sell.STORY:Most of the vegetable supplies to the capital come from neighboring states by truck.[Rajinder Kumar, Wholesale Vegetable Seller]:"There is a shortage of a few vegetables, if the strike continues, we will face more problems."The All India Motor Transport Congress, which represents around 6 million truckers across the country, has called for an indefinite strike since January 5th. They're demanding a reduction of diesel prices and certain tax concessions. The country's 200,000 transport companies have been hit in recent months by a slowing economy, higher interest rates on vehicle loans and stiffer competition from the railways.Tens of thousands of truckers have been off the roads after talks between the truckers and federal government officials broke down on the last weekend. The truckers have vowed to stay off the roads until their demands are met.Regular customers who throng the market early in the morning to buy vegetables at cheaper wholesale prices said that the prices have doubled.[Akhilesh Kewat, Customer]: "We come here daily to buy vegetables. The rates have doubled because of the strike."The government, which last week unveiled a second economic stimulus package to boost sectors such as infrastructure and real estate, has said it will act tough against striking truckers. While most contemporary cantors had to produce a cantata per week, Buxtehude placed his genius in the service of works of the highest artistic demands. BuxWV 41 is one of the most dazzling examples. In Buxtehudes chorale concertos the voices and instruments engage in extensive concertato interchange as equal partners and the texture is often quite contrapuntal, whereas in the chorale sinfonia (e.g. the opening strophe of BuxWV 41) the instruments predominate while a single voice sings the unadorned cantus firmus. The concertato chorale harmonization represents a grafting of the instrumental interjections characteristic of the concerto on to the four-part chorale harmonizations found in hymnals; it is Buxtehudes most characteristic form of chorale treatment for voices. Most of them contain two to eight chorale strophes that vary only slightly from one to the next. - Kerala J. SnyderDieterich Buxtehude's Abendmusiken achieved fame far beyond the walls of Lubeck, such that J.S. Bach timed his famous trip in the fall of 1705 to coincide with this yearly event, which took place from four to five o'clock on the last two Sundays of Trinity and the second, third, and fourth Sundays of Advent. Buxtehude's presentations normally consisted of five-part oratorios, and with one possible exception they are all lost. In the year 1700, however, he departed from his normal practice and instead presented five programs of unrelated works for voices with instruments. The singers and instrumentalists for Buxtehude's Abendmusik concerts performed from six balconies surrounding the large organ at the west end of the church, and the performers for this recording have been similarly placed in balconies surrounding the large North German Baroque Organ. None of the extant librettos of Buxtehude's Abendmusiken mention the playing of solo organ music, but the Abendmusiken always followed the afternoon vesper service in the church, and it seems quite likely that he might have played the organ in the interim between vespers and the concert. - Preface from Intim's Musik "Abendmusiken" Edition Related: dieterich dietrich diderich buxtehude cantata buxwv41 baroque | |

| Does international law apply to Israel?Fri, 09 Jan 2009 12:44:33 -0800 by ArchivesAlgeriennesHuman shields, International law and the seige of GazaDavid Foster from Inside Story (UK) interviews guests from Tel Aviv, Doha and London.Don't say you didn't know about:Israel and international law.Drafted by Richard Kuper and Daniella Jaff-Klein with thanks to Azem Bishara. The Fourth Geneva Convention 1949:The Fourth Geneva Convention was specifically designed to protect civilians in time of war and focuses on the treatment of civilians in the hands of the adversary, whether in occupied territories or in internment. * It was adopted on 12 August 1949 and entered into force on 21 October 1950.2. Applicability of the Fourth Geneva Convention to the Occupied Territories * Israel ratified the Fourth Geneva Convention with effect from 6 July 1951. * The convention is considered to have been elevated to the status of "customary international law", which means it applies irrespective of whether a State has ratified it. * Apart from Israel, the entire international community, has unambiguously accepted the applicability of the Fourth Geneva Convention to those territories captured and occupied by Israel in the 1967 war, which include the West Bank and Gaza. * Both the Security Council and the General Assembly have consistently issued resolutions calling on Israel to recognise the applicability of the Convention, a view that has been endorsed by the International Committee of the Red Cross.3. Scope of the Fourth Geneva Convention * The Convention deals specifically with the treatment of what it calls 'protected persons' - civilians who find themselves in enemy hands as a result of a conflict or an occupation. * The Convention prohibits, among other things, violence to life and person, torture, taking of hostages, humiliating and degrading treatment, sentencing and execution without due legal process, and collective punishments of any kind, with respect to all "protected persons". It calls for them to be humanely treated at all times, with no physical or moral coercion, intimidation, deportation. * It specifies 'grave breaches' of the Convention as including willful killing; torture or inhuman treatment; willfully causing great suffering or serious injury to body or health; unlawful deportation or transfer or unlawful confinement of a protected person; willfully depriving a protected person of the rights of fair and regular trial; taking of hostages and extensive destruction and appropriation of property, not justified by military necessity and carried out unlawfully and wantonly.
