| Superman - Lois and Clark FeminismFri, 09 Jan 2009 12:24:30 -0800 by KahiaraFirstly, I love "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman". That is where this clip is from. I think they made a great show with wonderful humour and chemisty as well as updating the modern status quo.I felt I had to upload this clip. As you can see, the sex divide made more sense in the past where men were the main workers but now both genders work, and women still get paid less for the same jobs on average - is it fair?Do I see men ripping their bodies apart to give birth? Breast-feeding - which can hurt, I mean imagine not to go into detail in case minors are reading but a baby doing the same to the mail equivalent - ouch! Also, women's bodies become less in shape easier because of these and men are more likely to run off after younger attractive females, or just other females.Yes, I may be ranting, and no, not all men (men not boys) are like this. But there is a general trend and argh it makes me mad.So yes, here's a clip for you to watch. It's humourous but I still cringe to watch it. | Ito Hiromi ????? "The Maltreatment of Meaning" ???????Thu, 08 Jan 2009 15:49:28 -0800 by jeffreyanglesThis film shows the Japanese poet Ito Hiromi reading excerpts from her poem "The Maltreatment of Meaning" at Western Michigan University on October 3, 2008. The translation by Jeffrey Angles is from _A Map Marked in a Foreign Tongue: Poems of Ito Hiromi_ (Action Books, forthcoming in 2009).This poem draws inspiration from American artist Bruce Naumans 1985 video installation "Good Boy, Bad Boy" in which two video monitors are placed opposite one another, each showing a sixty minute-long video loop. In them, two actors recite alternating phrases, such as "good boy" and "bad boy," with an increasing degree of emotion. Itos poem, written at a time when she was traveling back and forth between the different linguistic worlds of the United States and Japan, shows her interest in (and resistance to) the signifying process by which people learn language and make meaning. In fact, the poem's structure is not unlike the grammatical drills that language learners use to master new patterns, yet by the end of the poem, the neat grammatical patterns have broken down. | Ito Hiromi ????? "Killing Kanoko" ???????Thu, 08 Jan 2009 14:37:08 -0800 by jeffreyanglesThis film shows the Japanese poet Ito Hiromi reading a slightly abridged version of her poem "Killing Kanoko" at Western Michigan University on October 3, 2008. The translation by Jeffrey Angles is from _A Map Marked in a Foreign Tongue: Poems of Ito Hiromi_ (Action Books, forthcoming in 2009).This poem, written at the time when Ito was taking care of her first daughter Kanoko, is one of Itos most famous and frequently anthologized poems. The bold expression of a young mothers desire to commit infanticide shocked many readers and earned Ito a place in the tabloid newspapers. The words "Congratulations on your destruction" (horoboshite omedeto gozaimasu) repeat and overlap, creating recurring, almost hypnotic cadences that parody the congratulatory message a young mother hears repeatedly upon becoming pregnant or giving birth.
