| Israel's failure to learnFri, 09 Jan 2009 01:00:20 -0800 by ArchivesAlgeriennesWhen George Bush, the US president, first entered the White House as the commander-in-chief in 2001, Palestinians were being killed in the al-Aqsa intifada.Eight years later, as Bush prepares to leave office, Israel is carrying out one of the largest massacres in its 60-year occupation of Palestine. The US, then and now, strongly backs Israel's offensive, justifying it as being, in fact, defensive. An Israeli general recently threatened to use military force to set Gaza back decades in much the same language used before the invasion of Lebanon in 2006. But despite the Israeli devastation of Lebanon, Hezbollah emerged victorious and the Shia resistance and social movement emerged a hero to the Arab world.Israel is about to make the same mistake with Hamas. Its notion of a truce with Hamas was that the Palestinians would quietly accept the siege. Israel would deny them the basic means of survival, let alone the basic means to create a functioning society. If the Palestinians attempted to resist, they would be crushed. As in Lebanon, Israel should have learned years ago that military might cannot crush Palestinian resistance movements. While the Israeli military again bombs the starving and imprisoned population of 1.5 million Gazans, the world watches their plight live as Western media scrambles to explain and, in some cases, justify the ongoing carnage.Even some Arab outlets have attempted to equate Palestinian resistance - and homemade rockets - with the might of the Israeli military machine. However, none of this is a surprise; the Israelis just concluded a global public relations campaign to gather support for their assault, even gaining the collaboration of some Arab states. An American periodical once asked me to contribute to a discussion on whether terrorism or attacks against civilians could ever be justified. My answer was that an American journal should not be asking whether attacks on civilians can ever be justified. This is a question for the weak, such as the Native Americans 150 years ago, the Jews in Nazi Germany, and the Palestinians today, to answer.Terrorism is a normative term which is used to describe what the 'other' does, not what 'we' do.Powerful nations such as Israel, the US, Russia or China will always describe their victims' struggle as terrorism. However, they fail to acknowledge as acts of terror the destruction of Chechnya, the slow slaughter of the remaining Palestinians, the repression of Tibetans, and the US occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan.Normativ e rules and what is legal and permissible are determined by the powerful. They formulate the concept of terrorism in normative terms and make it appear as if a neutral court derived such definitions instead of the oppressors. For the weak to resist becomes illegal by definition. This excessive use of legal jargon actually undermines the fundamentals of what is truly legal and diminishes the credibility of international institutions such as the UN. The law becomes the enemy of those who struggle. It becomes apparent that the powerful - those who make the rules - insist on legality merely to preserve the power relations that serve them or to maintain their occupation and colonialism.Colonial powers use civilians strategically, settling them to claim land and dispossess the natives, be they indigenous populations in North America or Palestinians in what are today Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.Attackin g civilians, then, becomes the last, most desperate and basic method of resistance in the face of overwhelming odds and imminent eradication. The Palestinians do not attack Israeli civilians with the expectation that such violence will destroy or defeat Israel. When the native population understands that there is an irreversible dynamic stripping them of their land and identity with the support of an overwhelming power then they are forced to resort to whatever methods of resistance they can muster. In 1948, when Israel was being established as a new state, 750,000 Palestinians were deliberately cleansed and expelled from their homes, and hundreds of their villages were destroyed.Their lands were settled by colonists who even today deny their very existence and wage a 60-year war against the remaining natives and the national liberation movements the Palestinians established around the world.Israel, its allies in the West and some regional Arab countries have managed to corrupt the leadership of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) and entice them with the promise of power at the expense of liberty for their people. This eventually neutralised and transformed the PLO into a liberation movement which collaborates with the occupier. The focus then shifted to Hamas, a movement which won legislative elections nearly three years ago and thus became a target for the Israelis. | YOU ARE EVERYTHING (Harry/Severus)Fri, 09 Jan 2009 00:39:24 -0800 by AislinAvalbane(WARNING: This vid involves male/male slash between Harry Potter and Severus Snape. If you arent into that sort of thing, or this pairing, please dont watch. Thanks)Hi Everyone!Well, I got Sony Vegas Pro 8 for Christmas, so here's my first vid with my new software! *Dances*This vid is dedicated to Severus, in honor of his birthday today, January 9th, and also to my dear friend and co-author of a fic we're working on that inspired this vid, ShadowScar. *HUGS*About the Vid:Basically, this vid is about how, after The War and Voldemort's defeat, Harry finally tells Severus how he feels. Severus, who has a hard time believing anyone could love him, especially Harry, argues with Harry. Severus had always cared for Harry, but was never allowed to show it for many reasons due to his position as a spy. Now that Harry's of age and Severus feelings have become love, he can't seem to find the words to tell Harry how he feels, so he lets Harry see into his pensieve, but he warns Harry he may not like all he sees. Still, curious, Harry looks anyway. When Harry emerges from the pensieve, he looks shocked and Severus panics, ready to run out of the room, ashamed of his past and feelings, thinking Harry is repulsed, but Harry stops him and tells him he understands and that there is no one he could ever love more then Severus - faults and all. The mutual love leads to other things ... Erm ... And the love and joy Harry has for Severus delves so deep, it even becomes the source of his patronus. I hope you all enjoy it. I kept it simple since Im still learning all this software can do. Let me know what you think! HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SEVERUS! Related: harry/severus | |

| My Little Pony 4Fri, 09 Jan 2009 00:24:53 -0800 by f25h22My Little Pony: The Movie is an animated feature film based on the popular My Little Pony toy line. It was released on June 20, 1986 by De Laurentiis Entertainment Group. The movie features the voices of Danny DeVito, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Rhea Perlman, and Tony Randall. Produced by Marvel Enterprises and Sunbow Productions, with animation production by Japan's Toei Animation and Korea's AKOM, My Little Pony: The Movie was succeeded by a television series which ran in late 1986. A 10-part episode from that series, The End of Flutter Valley, was a sequel to the movie. At Dream Castle, the My Little Ponies are preparing for the Spring Festival. One of the events is a show by the Baby Pony dancers, but it ends disastrously when Baby Lickety-Split tries a new dance step and trips all the other Baby Ponies, ruining the performance. She is scolded by Buttons, and decides to run away. Spike the baby dragon decides to follow in order to keep an eye on her. From the Volcano of Gloom, the witch Hydia watches the My Little Ponies via her magic cauldron and tells her daughters Draggle and Reeka to ruin the celebration. Draggle and Reeka's initial attempt is a failure, so Hydia decides to make Smooze, a sentient purple lava that can bury the entirety of Ponyland. The sisters collect the ingredients to make Smooze, but are too afraid to get the final ingredient, Phlume. Regardless, the spell seems to work and the Smooze attacks Ponyland. Magic Star, Shady, Gusty (who are out searching for Baby Lickety-Split) and the bushwoolies are the first to see the Smooze. Shady and a purple bushwoolie continue the search for Baby Lickety-Split, while everyone else returns to Dream Castle to warn the others. When the Ponies arrive with their warning, Wind Whistler and North Star fly off to retrieve the Rainbow of Light, a magical object that is kept safe by a girl named Megan since their previous adventure. Megan and her younger siblings Danny and Molly insist on coming back with them to Dream Castle. By the time they arrive, Dream Castle is buried by Smooze. Megan releases the Rainbow, which initially succeeds in halting the Smooze but is then gobbled up by it. The stalled Smooze then hardens into a shell, making it impossible for the Ponies to retrieve their home or their weapon. Hydia realises that the reason the Smooze hardened was because the spell did not include the Phlume. She forces her daughters to collect it. Megan, Fizzy and Wind Whistler visit the Moochick for help. Hearing what happened to Dream Castle, he conjures them a new home based on his assistant Habbit's design: Paradise Estate. Habbit produces a map to the home of the Flutter Ponies, whom have the power to defeat the Smooze. The Moochick magics them and Paradise Estate back to Dream Valley. Once the new home is settled, Megan, Wind Whister, Magic Star, Fizzy, Danny and Molly leave for Flutter Valley. Spike and Lickety-Split, who have been forced farther from home by the Smooze, encounter the Grundles, goblin-like creatures who offer to help the pair find their way home. During their travel, their encounter the reawakened Smooze, which has been revived by the witches' Phlume. They end up in a meadow of flowers, where they save Morning Glory, a Flutter Pony, who has fallen into a well. Grateful, she leads them to Flutter Valley to ask for help in defeating the Smooze. Megan's group travel through a field of giant sunflowers, barely escaping from the Smooze. They reunite with Shady and the purple bushwoolie, who report that they've failed to find Baby Lickety-Split. They continue through Shadow Forest, dodging the attacks of sentient trees. They finally reach a valley filled with flowers, but are blocked from their final destination by a giant eight-legged monster Ahgg, who was sent by the witches to stop them. Molly comes up with the idea to tickle him, which renders the beast helpless. Finally arriving at Flutter Valley, Megan pleads with Rosedust, Queen of the Flutter Ponies, to help them defeat the Smooze. Rosedust initially refuses, but when Morning Glory arrives with Baby Lickety-Split's group, they manage to argue their cause and Rosedust relents. Back in Dream Valley, the Witches sail on the Smooze as it approaches the Paradise Estate. Suddenly Megan and friends, along with the Flutter Ponies, arrive by flight. The Flutter Ponies blast the their Utter Flutter magic, forcing it back towards the Volcano of Gloom and restoring both Dream Castle and the Rainbow. Now that the Little Ponies have the Paradise Estate, Magic Star offers Dream Castle to the Grundles, while Wind Whistler and North Star fly the children back home. Related: my little pony | |

| 100 Greatest Singers: FRIEDRICH SCHORRFri, 09 Jan 2009 00:23:10 -0800 by 100SingersTHIS PROJECT IS RESERVED ONLY FOR THE GREATEST! Austria-hungarian bass-baritone Schorr one of the greatest? Please comment!Friedrich Schorr, Bass-Baritone (1889-1953)Richard Wagner - Der fliegende Holländer (The flying Dutchman)Die Frist ist um!(Recorded 1929)My personal opinion: Friedrich Schorr in his own words: "I´ve sung the role of Hans Sachs more than 170 times. Nevertheless, before every new performance I study the full score anew. I still find something new, not only in the music, also in the character... It´s been said, I have a different intrepretation for Wagner, I would sing him more than to declaim him. In fact, I´m confident, Wagner must be performed in harmony with the melody. I can´t see a difference between the melodic styles of Verdi and Wagner... Don´t blame Wagner for that what is called wrong "Sprechgesang". When I sing Wagner, I try to bound the phrases the same I do with Verdi. It was said, Wagner damaged the voice and still today many people believe that. But german music departured from a tonal adjustment and began with screaming. That´s the reason I defeated to sing Wozzeck".Friedrich Schorr was not only acclaimed as the greatest Wagner-Baritone in his time but also in history. Fame is one thing, but I wanted to be sure again. I compared him with Herbert Janssen, Hans Hermann Nissen, Wilhem Rode and Michael Bohnen, and Schorr really did it! Maybe I missed hearing something wrong, but I can´t find anything to criticize. In his monolog from "Holländer" the sound emission is mighty but clear with astonishing flexibility and expressive nuances: Convulsive resignation ("Dies der Verdammnis Schreckgebot") and frightened accentuation ("...mit dem die Welt zusammenkracht"). For "Holländer" Wagner demanded dark and eerie modulation. Hans Hotters performance is belcantesque, Bryn Terfel is ostentatious, James Morris sounded like jealous Otello, George London overacted. In my opinion, Holländer is powerless, without any hope. His monolog should be a mixture of resignation and self-pity, as far as a ghost is qualified to feel this way. Schorr came near.1923 he first traveled to america, the year after he sang Wolfram at the Metropolitan, where he became a longstanding star with over 400 performances until 1943. It was absurd he couln´t return to germany in consequence of his anchestry. In these disastrous years, germany lost many of his greatest artists. | is it you -jonasbros 63Thu, 08 Jan 2009 22:04:46 -0800 by shenoahmckanOK I AM BEGGING. PLEASE COMMENT. PLEASE. I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU GUYS WANT IF YOU DON'T COMMENT. NO RECAPAndy's mind was racing. She knew Kevin was only thinking of her, but she couldn't leave him. It is true that she had dreamed of this day most of her life. But she just got him back. She couldn't leave him. Not now. Not ever. She had only ran about 4 blocks when she saw him. Well, not him exactly, but a poster of his face. She stopped. She was looking at a huge poster announcing The JB in concert. But she only looked at him. Even in a picture his smile made her heart melt. And that is when she realized what she was doing. She had promised him she wouldn't do this anymore. That she wouldn't run from her fear. She couldn't do this to him again. Yes, she was thinking of him right now instead of herself. That realization shocked her. In the middle of her chaos he was able to bring her back with just his smile. And not even the real him, just his picture. He was her world. And she would do anything to make him happy. That is when she knew she would go. She would go to NYU for him. Because, HE loved her and HE wanted her to be happy. HE wanted her to live her dream. Not because it is what she had wanted all her life, but because it was what HE wanted for her.She took Matt's phone out of her pocket. And dialed the number. It rang only once.Mandy: Andy, is that you? (worried)Andy: yesMandy: are you ok?Andy: yesShe hears Mandy saying : she's okMandy: (to andy) where are you?Andy: i'm on my way back to the hotel.Mandy:(releave d) thank god, we have been worried sick.Andy:(sounding defeated) Mandy, tell Kevin he wins.Mandy: ok.And with that Andy hangs up. It only took 15 mins for her to get back to the hotel. When she exited the elevator she saw everyone sitting in the hallway as if they where waiting on her. She walks by Matt and Patrick first. Stopping only long enough to drop Matts phone in his lap. She doesn't speak to anyone until she reaches the door to her room. Sitting on the floor in front of her door is Kevin. He looked so tired. He just sat there looking at her. As if he was waiting on her to say something. Waiting for her to explain. Or at least apologize. So she did.Andy: (looking at Kevin) I'm sorry i ran out like that. I only ran 4 blocks then i walked back. So you win. I'll go to NYU. Now would you please move, I am tired and i would like to go to sleep.Kevin stood up, never taking his eyes off of her. He took the 2 steps that seperated them. Never saying a word. He picked her up, bridal style. And carried her to his room. Andy was too mental tired to even try to fight him or ask what he was doing. It didn't matter. If HE wanted her to stay with him tonight she would. She would do anything for him. Even if he didn't know it yet. Like she had said before, HE was her life. She just never realize how true that statement was until tonight. Kevin opened the door to his room and walked in. using his foot to close it behind them. He walked over to the bed and sat down. Still holding Andy. He pulled her as close to him as humanly possible. He sat there just holding her. And he cried. His tears were tears of relief. he was so scared he had lost her again. He was afraid that when she called this time, that her dad wouldn't get to her in time. He finally ran out of tears. Andy just laid against his chest and let him cry. It broke her heart know that she had caused him so much pain. When she felt him stop crying she finally had the nerve to look up at him. What she saw in his eyes made her wish she hadn't . Seeing his pain was worse than just feeling it. She used her hand to gently wipe away the tears on his cheeck. She felt him lean his face into her hand, just as he had done that night at their first concert. She had to make it up to him. somehow.Kevin scooted back on the bed until he had room to lay Andy next to him. He had positioned himself so that Andy head was laying on his shoulder and his other hand was around her waist. He kissed her on top of her head. When she looked up at him, he sweetly kissed her on the lips and pushed her hair out of her face. Andy: Kevin..(she started but was stopped by his thumb brushing across her lips)Kevin: not tonight. Tonight we are the happiest couple in the world who had a wonderful date and are crazy in love with each other. Tonight you will sleep in my arms and dream of me kissing you. And i will dream of our life together. Tonight we won't let the world interupt. then tomorrow we will talk. tonight Will be perfect. Just like i planned it to be. (he kissed her one more time) now sleep, babe, because tonight you are mine again.Andy snuggled as close to him as she possible could. Wishing she could tell him just how true that last sentence was. Tonight she had become "his". In ways her own heart didn't understand. She fell asleep and he was right tonight she did dream of him...tomorrow??? Bringing together the research of Western medicine, neuroscience and physics with the insights of Ayurvedic theory, he explains that the human body is controlled by a "network of intelligence" grounded in quantum reality. Beyond a superficial psychological state, this intelligence lies deep enough to change the basic pattenrs that design our physiology -- with the potential to defeat cancer, heart disease, and even aging itself. In this inspiring and pioneering work, Dr. Chopra offers us both a fascinating intellectual journey and a deeply moving vision of hope and healing.Visit http://www.chopra.co m for more information Related: health healing physics quantum ayurveda mind body consciousness | |

| Sympathy, TendernessThu, 08 Jan 2009 21:07:06 -0800 by annimayqueen15Wow, guys. This is like the longest I've ever gone between uploading videos. I feel like such a slug because I've been so lazy lately. But I'm back now, and full of new ideas! [Yeah, I know it's only been a few weeks. Shut up. xD]This little AMV is my tribute to Kagura, one of my favorite Inu Yasha characters. Seriously, she rocks so hard. The premise for this is pretty easy to see, but I'll explain it anyway. Kagura is constantly being threatened and abused by Naraku, and the only way she can convince herself to keep going is by thinking of her meetings with Sesshoumaru. She holds a secret affection for him, and the though of being able to see him again helps her maintain a will to live and defeat Naraku so that she can be free.So that's that. I know it's been a while, but ya'll remember what to do, right? Watch, rate, comment, and ENJOY! *ALL MATERIALS BELONG TO THEIR RESPECTIVE OWNERS. I OWN NOTHING. THANK YOU.* Related: anime inu yasha kagura sesshoumaru naraku amv | |
